Construction experience forms the backbone of effective legal representation in the building industry. After graduating from Purdue University with a Construction Management degree, I spent over 10 years serving on management teams for commercial construction projects ranging from $1.5M to $125M. Throughout my career, I've worked across six different states, including Indiana, Illinois, Colorado, California, Oregon, and Washington, holding various positions from estimator to field engineer to project manager.
Before transitioning to law, however, I dedicated approximately 5 years as an in-house construction consultant for a Seattle law firm specializing in construction litigation. This unique combination of hands-on field experience and legal consultation provided me with insights that most construction lawyers simply don't possess.
The Foundation: Diane’s Experience in Construction
My journey in construction began when I got boots on the ground on my first large commercial project, giving me firsthand experience with the challenges faced by contractors, subcontractors, and project owners. During those formative years, I developed a deep understanding of project lifecycle management, from initial bidding through final closeout.
Working as a field engineer taught me the technical aspects of construction. Over the years, I worked my way through the roles of office engineer, project engineer, superintendent, and estimator before being promoted to project manager. The experience in each of these roles equipped me with crucial skills in contract administration, budget control, and dispute resolution. These roles allowed me to see projects from multiple angles—understanding both the practical limitations of building processes and the contractual frameworks that govern them.
What proved most valuable was learning to navigate the complex relationships between general contractors, subcontractors, architects, and owners. I witnessed countless issues arise from misaligned expectations, inadequate documentation, and communication breakdowns. These insights later became invaluable in my legal practice.
Additionally, experiencing construction across different states exposed me to varying building codes, regulatory environments, and regional practices. This geographical diversity strengthened my adaptability and problem-solving abilities.
Most significantly, my construction background gave me fluency in the industry's specialized language and technical concepts—something purely academic training simply cannot provide. This foundation ultimately became my greatest asset when I decided to merge my construction expertise with legal practice.
The Shift to Law: Merging Two Worlds
The decision to pursue law after years in construction wasn't made lightly. Throughout my time as an in-house construction consultant for a Seattle law firm, I witnessed firsthand how practical field knowledge could transform legal representation.
For someone with construction expertise, the transition to law offers unique advantages. My technical background enables me to communicate effectively with experts and quickly grasp complex engineering concepts in a way that purely academic lawyers cannot.
Most importantly, this career shift enables me to provide preventative legal work rather than reactive litigation. There is tremendous satisfaction in proactively advising clients to help prevent or mitigate potential legal issues. My field experience enables me to impact day-to-day decisions when a dispute arises rather than waiting until the end of the project and litigating after the fact.
Through this transition, I've created a distinctive professional identity where my construction knowledge fundamentally shapes my legal approach.
Lessons from the Journey: What Makes a Top Construction Attorney
Through years of practice, I've developed several key qualities that truly distinguish me from my competition. First among these is comprehensive knowledge of the construction process and construction law, paired with a meticulous eye for detail that allows me to recognize important subtleties that many attorneys might overlook. Construction projects involve multifaceted elements where overlooked clauses, improperly installed building components, or missed deadlines can lead to costly disputes.
Effective communication stands as another cornerstone skill. An effective attorney must be able to translate complex legal concepts into clear, comprehensible language. This transparency fosters trust—the essential foundation necessary for effective communication among all involved parties. My experience as an in-house construction consultant helped me sharpen these skills by bridging the gap between technical experts and lawyers who didn't immediately grasp the technical jargon.

My journey from construction sites to courtrooms represents more than a career change—it embodies the fusion of practical knowledge and legal expertise that truly defines excellence in construction law. Field experience certainly creates a foundation no law school can teach. Understanding the daily challenges faced by contractors, owners, and subcontractors allows me to anticipate issues before they escalate into costly disputes, no matter who I am representing.
I focus my practice on assisting project owners and contractors with their legal needs as they arise. While I prefer to help my clients proactively avoid disputes, that doesn't happen as often as I’d like. I’m usually contacted after disputes occur. Regardless, my passion for helping my clients remains unchanged.
